Shirdi Airport, a vital gateway to the pilgrimage town of Shirdi, Maharashtra, is set for a major upgrade. The Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) has awarded the contract for a new, state-of-the-art terminal building to Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd. (MEIL).

Key facts about the new terminal:

    • Size: The new terminal will sprawl across a massive 55,000 square meters, a significant increase from the existing facility.
    • Passenger Capacity: This expansion will allow Shirdi Airport to handle a whopping 1200 passengers per hour, which is four times its current capacity. This caters to the rising number of devotees visiting Shirdi.
    • Project Timeline: The construction is expected to be completed within two years, with work commencing soon.
    • Project Cost: The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 527 crore.

    What this means for Shirdi:

    • Enhanced Connectivity: The new terminal will significantly improve passenger experience and boost connectivity to Shirdi. This will make it easier for pilgrims and tourists to reach the holy town.
    • Economic Growth: The increased capacity is expected to attract more flights and airlines, leading to a potential rise in tourism and economic activity in the region.

    Current Status:

MEIL secured the contract after a competitive bidding process. MADC had initially received applications from three firms, but after evaluation, shortlisted IRCON International Ltd. and MEIL for the final bidding round. MEIL emerged victorious with the most competitive bid.

    Looking Ahead:

The construction of the new terminal is a significant development for Shirdi Airport. It underscores the growing importance of this pilgrimage destination and paves the way for a smoother and more efficient travel experience for visitors. — The metrorailguy
