MDH and Everest Masalas Banned in Some Countries Over Carcinogen Concerns

Several countries have recently imposed bans on the sale of certain MDH and Everest masala products due to concerns about the presence of ethylene oxide, a chemical classified as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Here’s a breakdown of the situation:

    The Allegations:

    • Hong Kong and Singapore were the first to raise the alarm, detecting ethylene oxide residues exceeding safe limits in specific MDH and Everest masala blends.
    • The banned products included MDH Madras Curry Powder, Everest Fish Curry Masala, MDH Sambhar Masala Mixed Masala Powder, and MDH Curry Powder Mixed Masala Powder.

    Ethylene Oxide and Health Concerns:

    • Ethylene oxide is a colorless gas commonly used as a fumigant to sterilize food products and medical equipment.
    • Long-term exposure to ethylene oxide has been linked to an increased risk of various cancers, including breast cancer and lymphoma.
    • Regulatory bodies in the countries concerned have deemed the detected levels unsafe for human consumption.

    Manufacturer Response:

    • Both MDH and Everest have refuted the allegations, claiming they adhere to stringent quality control measures and do not use ethylene oxide in their products.
    • The companies have called for further investigation and have cooperated with the authorities.

    Current Situation:

    • The bans remain in effect in Hong Kong and Singapore.
    • Maldives has also followed suit and banned the sale of these specific MDH and Everest masala products.
    • Indian authorities, including the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), have initiated investigations and are conducting quality checks on MDH and Everest products.

    What Consumers Can Do:

    • Be aware of the banned products in the countries mentioned.
    • If you have purchased any of these specific MDH or Everest masala blends, you can contact the retailer for information on returns or exchanges.
    • Look for reputable brands that prioritize food safety and transparent manufacturing practices.

    Looking Ahead:

    • The situation requires further investigation to determine the extent of the issue and ensure consumer safety.
    • Collaboration between regulatory bodies, food manufacturers, and independent testing agencies is crucial.
    • Consumers should stay informed and make informed decisions when purchasing spices and other food products.

It’s important to note that these bans are specific to certain products and countries. MDH and Everest masalas are still widely available in India and other regions. However, this incident highlights the importance of food safety regulations and the need for transparency in food production practices.
