The Union Home Ministry has revoked the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) licenses of six NGOs, citing violations of FCRA rules, misuse of foreign funds, and religious conversion activities.
Scrutiny Leads to License Cancellation
Following an investigation in March-April 2024, the Ministry scrutinized the activities of these NGOs and subsequently cancelled their FCRA licenses.
The Affected NGOs
- Diocesan Society Church of North
- Jesus and Mary Delhi Educational Society
- Delhi Diocese Overseas Grant Fund
- Institute of Economic Growth (IEG)
- Samuel Foundation Charitable India Trust
- Hemophilia Federation of India (HFI)
Earlier Revocations and NGO Response
This action follows the cancellation of licenses for five other prominent NGOs earlier in April for similar reasons. Representatives from some recently affected NGOs have challenged the revocations, claiming they are arbitrary and have hampered their daily operations due to financial constraints. They have filed revision petitions with the Ministry.
About the NGOs
- The Institute of Economic Growth (IEG) is a renowned institution focused on economic and social development research. It has collaborated with international scholars, including Nobel laureates.
- Samuel Foundation Charitable India Trust: Provides technical education programs.
- Hemophilia Federation of India (HFI): Advocates for children with haemophilia.
Uncertainties Remain
The NGOs maintain their innocence, and the specific violations haven’t been disclosed. The Ministry has not responded to queries regarding the cancellations. Whether these NGOs will regain their FCRA licenses remains to be seen.
