BANIHAL/JAMMU: Stranded travelers can sigh relief as the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, a crucial link between Kashmir and the rest of India, has reopened for light motor vehicles (LMVs) after a two-day closure.
Cause of Closure:
Heavy rains in the Ramban district triggered multiple landslides, blocking the highway and hindering traffic flow. Clearing debris from these landslides took significant time and effort.
Current Situation:
- The highway is now operational for light vehicles only. Heavy motor vehicles (trucks, buses) are still not allowed due to ongoing road clearance and widening activities.
- Traffic officials report that LMVs were released on the highway from both Jammu and Srinagar sides around 9.30 am on Wednesday, May 1st, 2024, after essential areas like Mehar, Dalwas, and Magerkote were cleared.
Impact and Future Considerations:
The two-day highway closures likely caused significant inconvenience to travellers and disruptions to goods transportation. While the partial reopening is a positive step, continued efforts are needed to ensure the full functionality of the highway.
