Mumbai: The timeless saree has graced the silver screen for decades in Bollywood films. Worn by legendary actresses and styled in countless ways, the saree has transcended mere clothing, becoming a powerful symbol of elegance, sensuality, and cultural identity. Here, we revisit some of Bollywood’s most iconic saree moments:

    • Desi Glam with Priyanka Chopra: Priyanka Chopra’s sizzling portrayal of a glamorous “Desi Girl” in the song of the same name from Dostana (2008) is unforgettable. The shimmery champagne-coloured saree with a halter neck blouse redefined modern saree drapes and perfectly captured the essence of a confident, contemporary Indian woman.
    • Saree with Sass: Sushmita Sen in Main Hoon Na (2004) Sushmita Sen’s portrayal of Miss Chandni, the hottest teacher anyone could ask for, redefined the saree as an outfit for a powerful, independent woman. Sen’s character rocked flowy chiffon sarees with tiny blouses, turning the college campus into her runway and leaving a lasting impression on audiences.
    • Dola Re Dola: A Double Dose of Elegance (Devdas, 2002) Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit Nene’s mesmerizing performances in the song “Dola Re Dola” from Devdas (2002) are etched in our memories. Their identical white sarees with golden borders and playful yet elegant dance moves showcased the enduring beauty and grace of the saree.
    • Sridevi’s Enchanting Twirl (Mr. India, 1987) Sridevi’s iconic yellow polka-dotted saree in “Hawa Hawai” from Mr. India (1987) is synonymous with playful charm. The way she twirled and danced, the vibrant colours, and the sheer joy she exuded made this a truly unforgettable saree moment.
    • Retro Chic with Reena Tandon (Mohra, 1994) Raveena Tandon’s sizzling white saree with a golden border in the song “Tip Tip Barsa Paani” from Mohra (1994) redefined sensuality in a saree. The rain-soaked dance sequence and the classic drape made this a timeless Bollywood moment.

This list barely scratches the surface of Bollywood’s love affair with the saree. From the grandeur of Mumtaz in Mughal-e-Azam to the fierce beauty of Deepika Padukone in Ram Leela, the saree has served as a canvas for countless stories and emotions.

These iconic moments not only showcase the versatility of the saree but also celebrate the enduring power of Indian fashion and cinema. So, the next time you see a saree on screen, remember the legacy it carries and the magic it continues to weave.
